Internal Transfers

An internal transfer student is someone who is already enrolled in a school/college other than the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin, who wishes to apply for admission to a major in the Jackson School. To initiate this process, a current UT student must apply for an internal transfer into the Jackson School through the online application below.

Minimum Requirements – B.S. Geological Sciences (General Geology, Geophysics, and Hydrogeology options)

All internal transfer applicants must meet the following minimum requirements by the end of the semester in which they apply:

  • Enrolled full-time (12 SCH) and within your first 4 long semesters (fall and spring) at UT Austin.
  • No more than 60 hours in-residence completed at UT Austin. (Note: Credit by exam, UT correspondence, extension and transfer hours do not count toward this requirement)
  • Good academic standing (e.g. UT GPA of 2.00 or higher).
  • Completion of the following course work (or equivalent) with a grade of C- or higher in each:
    • Calculus I: UT Austin courses M 408C or M 408K & M 408L or M 408N & M 408S.
    • Geology or Related Subject: UT Austin courses GEO 401, GEO 303, or closely related subject.
    • **Applicants with over 30 hours in-residence should also complete Calculus II, UT Austin M 408D or M 408M (or equivalent), and CH 301 with a grade of C- or higher.

Minimum Requirements – B.S. Geological Sciences (Teaching option) & B.A. Geological Sciences

All internal transfer applicants must meet the following minimum requirements by the end of the semester in which they apply:

  • Enrolled full-time (12 SCH) and within your first 4 long semesters (fall and spring) at UT Austin.
  • No more than 60 hours in-residence completed at UT Austin. (Note: Credit by exam, UT correspondence, extension and transfer hours do not count toward this requirement)
  • Good academic standing (e.g. UT GPA of 2.00 or higher).
  • Completion of the following course work (or equivalent) with a grade of C- or higher in each:
    • Mathematics (Core): UT Austin course M 305G or higher with a grade of C- or higher.
    • Geology or Related Subject: UT Austin courses GEO 401, GEO 303, or closely related subject.
    • **Applicants with over 30 hours in-residence should also complete UT Austin course CH 301 with a grade of C- or higher.

Note: Transfer work used to satisfy application requirements must be on file with The University of Texas at Austin.

  • All internal transfer applications go through a holistic, competitive selection process.
  • Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.
  • All application materials must be submitted using the online application.

JSG Internal Transfer Information Sessions

All students interested in applying to internally transfer to the Jackson School should attend an info session before submitting an application. No registration necessary, and please check in with the front desk of the Holland Student Family Center when you arrive (JGB 2.102). For our Virtual session, please join the room 3-5 minutes before it begins to limit disruptions.
