Taiyi Wang and his group investigate the mechanics of fluid (e.g. magma, water, supercritical CO2) interaction with fractures. To this end, his group employs analytical, numerical modeling and machine learning techniques to decipher seismic and geodetic data. Recent loci of research include the earthquake sequence at Santorini, the caldera collapse eruptions at Kilauea Volcano, the induced aseismic/seismic slip in Enhanced Geothermal Systems, theoretical treatment of coupled shear slip-opening on non-planar faults, and development of seismic representation theorem for time-dependent source processes.
Taiyi has a B. A. in geology from Carleton College, a Ph.D. in Geophysics from Stanford University, and was the O. K. Earl postdoctoral fellow at California Institute of Technology before joining UT as an Assistant Professor.
