Financial Support
For our GEO graduate students:
On average, Jackson School graduate students admitted with support receive some of the best overall packages in the country. The most recent starting salaries for TAs and RAs, as well as fellowship stipends, were $3,015 a month. Fellowships are eligible for the same UT Austin benefits package as any TA or RA. Jackson School support, in addition to being generous, is guaranteed (subject to requirements) and includes outstanding health benefits.
Standard offers of admission guarantee support for established durations, subject to satisfactory work performance and progress toward a graduate degree.
Durations of guaranteed institutional support:
- M.S. Program: 4 semesters (fall and spring).
- Ph.D. Program: 10 semesters (fall and spring).
Guaranteed support takes the forms of fellowships, teaching assistantships (TAs), and graduate research assistantships (GRAs). Students pursuing the M.A. degree are not eligible for this support.
The Jackson School also provides:
- Great Start Fellowship of $1,000 for all new GEO graduate students, to help with relocating and settling in Austin. The fellowship is in addition to any other award offered.
- Professional Development Support (submit the request form)
- $1,000 for all M.S. students.
- $3,000 for all Ph.D. students.
- Assistance pursuing External Grant Proposals & Scholarships
For our EER graduate students:
A limited number of fellowships are available to EER students. Students desiring to be considered for financial aid should include this request in the application materials submitted to EER. Preference for financial aid will be given to those applicants who meet the priority deadlines. Awards, which are merit based, will be for one year only, with renewal for the second year contingent on satisfactory performance. A fundamental indication of satisfactory performance will be the development of a well-conceived thesis proposal and establishment of a supervisory committee. Students seeking support for their second year should complete a support request application by April 15 of their first year.
Students may also be eligible for additional assistance in the form of traditional Research and Teaching Assistant positions (pending faculty offers) and EER Research Fellowships. EER Fellows will be asked to engage in research with faculty, present research summaries to faculty and student peers, and attend seminars as directed. The most recent starting salaries for TAs and RAs, as well as fellowship stipends, were $3,015 a month. Fellowships are eligible for the same UT Austin benefits package as any TA or RA. Jackson School support includes outstanding health benefits.
