Laptop Requirements for Undergraduates

To ensure that undergraduate students can successfully run the necessary software for coursework, including MATLAB, ArcGISpro, Microsoft Office, and other geoscience-related applications, a laptop is required for school. We recommend the following minimum or preferred specifications for undergraduate laptops.

General Notes

  • Both Windows and Mac laptops are acceptable but due to the software Jackson School students use, Windows is typically recommended.
  • Some software, such as ArcGIS, is only available on Windows. Mac users will need to set up a Windows virtualization environment (e.g., VirtualBox [free] or VMware Fusion.)
  • What Not to Buy: Chromebooks, iPads, and tablets are not recommended, as they are not designed to run required software. These devices do not support necessary applications such as ArcGISpro and MATLAB.
  • For UT software support (MATLAB, Microsoft Office … etc.): Contact Enterprise Technology at https://it.utexas.edu/services/i (512-475-9400)
  • For additional software support: Contact IT at https://www.jsg.utexas.edu/help
  • Students receiving financial aid and that are loan eligible may contact the Office of Student Financial Services to have their aid adjusted to include the cost of their laptop.
