Chuanming's primary research interests lie in seismology, focusing on exploring the seismic structure of Earth's crust and uppermost mantle.
During his Ph.D., he constructed a new surface wave database across Alaska based on ambient noise and earthquake data. He further built the tilted transversely isotropic model of the continental Alaskan crust and depth-dependent azimuthal anisotropy beneath the Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone.
His current projects aim to explore the relationship between seismic anisotropy and its tectonic implications in regions including the Juan de Fuca Plate, the Cascadia subduction zone, and Anatolia.
