The Jackson School of Geosciences has launched Project SHIELD (Science for Hazards, Impact Evaluation, and Long-term aDaptation), a new initiative focused on understanding Earth hazards and their impacts on communities, infrastructure, and the environment.

Part of the Jackson School’s Strategic Investment Plan, the program brings together faculty and researchers to study how multiple hazards can combine or occur in sequence to increase risk. The goal is to better understand, monitor, and predict these events in ways that help reduce risks to people and critical infrastructure.

Project SHIELD will support workshops, pilot research projects, and fellowships for students and postdoctoral researchers, with a workshop planned for summer 2026. Integrating expertise across the Jackson School will help advance research that improves how communities prepare for and respond to natural hazards.
