This spring, eleven of our faculty members at The University of Texas at Austin, including Jackson School of Geosciences Research Professor Bridget Scanlon, have been honored as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). This prestigious recognition celebrates their remarkable contributions to the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Scanlon, a leading authority in water resources, has dedicated her career to research that supports policymakers and water managers in making informed decisions. But her influence doesn’t stop there! She also hosts the engaging and insightful Water Resources Podcast, where she explores global water management challenges and solutions with top experts in the field.

Professor Jay Banner has received one of the nation’s most prestigious teaching awards: the Robert Foster Cherry Award from Baylor University! This award celebrates extraordinary university or college teachers who have made a significant, lasting impact on their students, and Professor Banner is a shining example of such an educator.

With a passion for sustainability, environmental science, geochemistry, and environmental justice, Professor Banner has inspired countless students through his engaging and impactful teaching. As the director of UT’s Environmental Science Institute, he has also founded the widely acclaimed public lecture series “Hot Science – Cool Talks,” which brings cutting-edge science to the public in an accessible and exciting way.

As part of this incredible honor, Professor Banner will be teaching in residence at Baylor during the 2025 spring semester. We congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to the inspiring work he will continue to do!
