Summer Volunteers
Interested in volunteering for GeoFORCE this summer?
Every summer, we strive to give students a look at what opportunities are available for them beyond high school. Professional and Alumni Mentors are exceptional examples of this during the week. Working alongside the educational staff, our mentors get to have real conversations with students over what a college and career path in the geosciences could look like.
GeoFORCE Professional Mentor
Professional Mentors are professional geoscientists and engineers interested in mentoring high school students throughout a week-long academy. They are a part of the educational team and will participate in outdoor activities. At a designated time in the week, Professional Mentors may present on their career and the path they took to get there.
GeoFORCE Alumni Mentor
Alumni Mentors are GeoFORCE graduates currently pursuing a graduate degree or in their early careers with an interest in mentoring high school students throughout a week-long academy. They are a part of the educational team and will participate in outdoor activities. At a designated time during the week, Alumni Mentors may present on their path to their current college/career.
Are you interested in being a Professional or Alumni Mentor for Summer 2024?
And we’ll reach out to schedule your participation on an academy!
Before reaching out, please consider the following:
- Your current or summer employer, grant-funding agency, academic advisor, and/or concurrent summer educational/research program must allow you to participate.
- Please know your summer availability before reaching out.
- As a volunteer, your deferred pay is considered an in-kind donation to the program and will be matched.
- Professional Mentors will have travel during the academy (daily bus travel), food, and any activities done (ex. national park entrances) paid for.
- Please Note: Professional Mentors will be asked to cover the cost of their travel to and from the academy on the first and final day. They will also be asked to cover the cost of lodging. GeoFORCE will set up the lodging beforehand to ensure Professional Mentors have a place to stay during the academy. We will be in close contact with you as the summer nears to go over the schedule of events for your assigned academy.
- Alumni Mentors will have travel, lodging, food, and any activities done (ex. national park entrances) paid for.
- Upon selection as a Mentor, volunteers will be asked to fill out paperwork and complete simple certification courses required by UT and UT’s Youth Protection Program. All volunteers MUST complete these requirements before the start of their assigned academy.
