In February 2024, earthquake scientists from the United States, Chile, Germany and Japan gathered at The University of Texas at Austin for the first International Earthquake Symposium.
The symposium helped share advances in earthquake science from around the world, as well as lay the groundwork for future projects, said Demian Saffer, the director of the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics, which hosted the meeting.
“The scientific community has made important advances in earthquake physics in the past few years,” said Saffer. “By bringing together experts from across the globe we can share our collective progress and plan a next generation of international collaborative programs.”
Speakers and participants included researchers from UT, the University of California, Berkeley, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, the Japan Agency for Marine- Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and Germany’s GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. JAMSTEC and GEOMAR are the leading national marine geophysics research centers in Japan and Germany.
