DEVELOPMENT OF AN ICP-MS TECHNIQUE TO QUANTIFY ANCIENT MAYA ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS

In May-June of 2021, in coordination with the Proyecto Arqueologico El Zotz (PAEZ), I led an archaeological investigation of S19-2293 (or La Represita), a small ancient Maya settlement group (below left) located to the north of the Classic Maya Center of El Zotz in North Central Guatemala. During our investigation of the wider site, we excavated a dam north of the settlment and collected soil samples from each unique stratigraphic layer (below right). During the course of our investigation, we noted natural and anthropogenic layers, and subsequent XRF analysis seemed to corroborate our field observations. However, more robust methods may reveal more about the chronology of dam construction and human-environment interactions at La Represita. In this project, we developed an ICP-MS-based procedure for studying soils from archaeological contexts in the Maya area.
