Imaging is part of the everyday procedure in the collections: new accessions are imaged, loans are imaged, and slowly other specimens in the collection are being imaged.
The imaging of the type collection is being supported by the National Science Foundation through their Biological Research Collections program (DBI 0646468). The project progress can be viewed on-line at the PaleoCentral website. The type and figured collection is estimated at 22,000 invertebrate fossil and plant specimens.
General record imagery is not always at the highest resolution, however, the NSF funded project within the type and figured collection is enabling images of those important reference specimens at a quality to compare with inspection of a specimen under a microscope.
The JavaScripts that are used to embed the scale of the image into the digital file, and the application of standard scale bars may be downloaded.
Over time many more of the estimated 4 million specimens in the general stratigraphic and taxonomic collections, will be imaged.
This project also includes rehousing, and conservation of specimens within that collection.
