Requirements

Program Requirements:

Citizenship: This opportunity is geared towards attracting members of underrepresented groups, and all IRES student participants must be US citizens or permanent residents.

Underrepresented status is broadly defined, and students have the opportunity to describe their status on the application.

Course requirements: There are no strict course requirements. However, we anticipate that the undergraduate students will have taken courses in any of the following (or their equivalents): Introductory Geology, Earth Materials, Field Methods, Sedimentary Rocks, and Life through Time.

In-person research. Students should anticipate working in person on the UT Austin campus, following the university COVID guidelines.

Time frame: We plan to coordinate with UT Austin’s Jackson School of Geosciences’ Undergraduate Research Traineeship Experience (RTX), which occurs between June 4-August 4. Start and end dates are flexible, but the paid research opportunity can extend to July 31.

Information for students outside of UT Austin. We open the IRES to student participation by those outside the Jackson School. We are particularly interested in former GeoFORCE graduates in Texas from Angelo State, Baylor, Dallas Baptist, Prairie View A&M, Rice, San Houston State, Texas A&M (numerous campuses), Texas Lutheran, Texas Southern, Texas State, Texas Tech, Univ. Houston, Univ. North Texas, UT San Antonio, and UT Tyler. We also seek to include former GeoFORCE students who may be attending community colleges in Texas (Austin, Houston, NE Texas, NW Vista, San Antonio College, San Jacinto, Southwest Texas).
