Data Sources for JSG: The University of Texas at Austin Institutional Reporting, Research, and Information Systems (IRRIS)
The data in this section from local and national sources demonstrate the challenge ahead of attracting more diverse students to the geosciences. Several refereed journal articles at the Research on Diversity in Geoscience page delve into the reasons of lack of attraction to the field and exiting from the field by surveying various sample sizes. More research is needed to find out if these findings are generalizable across different regions of the U.S. and across different subgroups of underrepresented students and faculty, as there is not a one size fits all solution.
Note that in the data from IRRIS, empty cells do not necessarily translate into no students in that subgroup, as with Black or African American from 2017-2019. Following the federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidance, if there are fewer than five students in a category, the number of students in that category is hidden to protect the student/s from being personally identified.
