Martin Jackson was born and schooled in Zimbabwe. He received degrees from the University of London and the University of Cape Town. After being a mineral-exploration geologist in southern Africa and as a Research Associate in the Precambrian Research Unit in Cape Town, he lectured for four years at the University of Natal, South Africa. Arriving in Texas in 1980, he began research on salt tectonics at the Bureau of Economic Geology. He has researched salt basins in East Texas, the Gulf of Mexico, the Paradox Basin, Iran, the Red Sea, Angola, Gabon, D.R. Congo, Brazil, Arctic Canada, the eastern Mediterranean, and Bay of Biscay, as well as Mars and Triton. In 1988, Jackson established the Bureau's Applied Geodynamics Laboratory, an industry-funded consortium that generates tectonic models and carries out research on salt tectonics worldwide. His current research focuses on completing and on writing a textbook on salt tectonics. Jackson has authored or co-authored more than 100 full-length papers and four books entitled "The Salt Mine: an Interactive Atlas of Salt Tectonics," "Salt Tectonics: a Global Perspective," "Salt Diapirs of the Great Kavir, Central Iran,"and "Crustal Evolution of Southern Africa: 3.8 Billion Years of Earth History." He served as Associate Editor of Geological Society of America Bulletin and American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin. His research resulted in four major awards from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
