The upper continental margin is a spatially heterogenous and rapidly evolving sedimentary region, where sediment input and distribution are shaped by wind-forced waves and currents, tides, and water mass variations. For modern processes, we utilize geophysical tools to examine stratigraphy of the subsurface and to map the character of the seafloor, coupled with sediment coring and real-time measurements of sediment transport. The intent is to examine how margins respond to events from the timescale of individual storms and river floods to Holocene fluctuations in climate and sea level. We also examine these systems in the geologic record through seismic imaging, drilling, and outcrop studies.

Dr. Steel's research is aimed at using clastic sedimentology to address problems in basin analysis, dynamic stratigraphy and clastic reservoirs. I am particularly interested to decipher the signatures of tectonics, climate, sea level change and sediment supply in stratigraphic successions.
