Established the chair of geology at UT Austin, and was the first chairman of the Department.

His students collected for the Dumble Survey. Investigated the geology of most of Texas.

Published an important work on the Black and Grand prairies of Texas.

Renowned for falling out with people. Is reputed to have argued with Dumble and not spoken to him again for forty years.
