EVENT: International Energy Security Symposium featuring Shell Oil Company President John Hofmeister and panelists, hosted by the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs and the Jackson School of Geosciences at The University of Texas at Austin.

BACKGROUND: In addition to increasing the supply of conventional oil and gas, Shell Oil Company President John Hofmeister believes that a culture of conservation and supply diversity, which includes investment in alternative and renewable energy, are essential elements for the future of United States energy security. Hofmeister will share his vision of energy security at noon, Sept. 20 with students and researchers at The University of Texas at Austin during a one-day symposium. Two panels will follow Hofmeister’s speech:
- 2:15 p.m., “Resources and Technology: What Energy Sources Will Be Available to the U.S. and World in the Coming Decades?”
- Moderator: Eric Barron, dean of the Jackson School of Geosciences
- William Fisher, professor in the Department of Geological Sciences and former dean of the Jackson School
- Ian Duncan, associate director of the Bureau of Economic Geology
- Dave Allen, director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Resources
- Sheldon Landsberger, coordinator of the Nuclear and Radiation Engineering program and professor in the College of Engineering.
- 3:30 p.m., “The Future of International Energy Security: Implications for Domestic and International Policy.”
- Moderator: James Steinberg, dean of the LBJ School of Public Affairs
- Charles Groat, director of the Center for International Energy & Environmental Policy
- Eugene Gholz, assistant professor in international policy and commerce at the LBJ School
- Michael Webber, associate director for program development at the Center for International Energy & Environmental Policy.
