International Laser Ablation Community to Gather at Jackson School

The University of Texas at Austin Jackson School of Geosciences will host the North American Workshop on Laser Ablation (NAWLA) May 25-27, 2017.

NAWLA is a new biennial meeting held in odd years, alternating with the European Workshop on Laser Ablation in even years. The Jackson School hosted the inaugural workshop in 2015.  The workshop mission is to facilitate laser ablation knowledge transfer and promote community among researchers located in North America, as well as other researchers across the world who use the scientific technique. Although the workshop has a regional emphasis, registrants for NAWLA’17  include researchers from 12 countries.

Confirmed speakers and topics include:

  • Sam Houk, Iowa State University – Foundations of ICP-MS
  • Henry Longerich, Memorial University – Foundations of LA-ICP-MS
  • Leonid Danyushevsky, University of Tasmania – TOF-ICP-MS applications
  • Noah McLean, Univ. of Kansas – U-Pb geochronology data reduction (ET_Redux)
  • José Almirall, Florida International University – Forensic applications
  • Davide Bleiner, EMPA Materials Science and Technology –  Extreme UV interaction with solids
  • Marcel Burger, ETH Zurich – Femtosecond lasers
  • Simon Jackson, Natural Resources Canada – Chemical imaging by LA-ICP-MS

The workshop features a new laser ablation image contest with a $1,000 prize. There is still time to register for the event or submit a poster. To register or for more information, click here or contact Nathan Miller.
