Black Gold

Black Gold: Several bills making their way through Congress would weaken a moratorium on offshore exploration on the Atlantic coast. Historically, North Carolina lawmakers have been opposed to offshore drilling, but skyrocketing prices at the pump and foreign oil dependence have pushed the issue back into the spotlight. Some say North Carolina is sitting on a black gold mine; others say offshore exploration would ruin our coastal economy. Host Frank Stasio speaks with Charles Groat, director of the Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy at the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas-Austin; Michael McOwen, a publisher and activist from Manteo; and Bill Whitsitt, president of the Domestic Petroleum Council.
