Welcome: To the Donald D. Harrington Symposium on the Geology of the Aegean.
The Donald D. Harrington Fellows Program at the University of Texas at Austin supports the development of this symposium.
The symposium is geared towards appealing to and educating researchers, students, and the general public regarding the importance of the Aegean in understanding Earth history.
The dates of the symposium are: April 28-30, 2008.
Leading scientists from a range of countries and with varied expertise wiil present their research regarding:
the geology of Aegean in general,
the geologic history of specific domains within the Aegean (Cyclades, Menderes, Kazdag, Rhodope, Crete, southern Balkans, etc),
the dynamic tectonic processes that occur within the Aegean,
its geo-archeological history,
its natural history and hazards, or
comparisons of the Aegean to regions elsewhere.
The list of keynote speakers can be found on the Keynotes page.
Here is a photo of all of the participants.
New! Symposium program and abstract volume is here.
The symposium includes an opening reception, a student-hosted dinner, two full days of talks, and a poster session.
New! We have opportunities to support the attendance of Texas 8th grade through high school teachers, including a waived conference registration fee, accommodation support, and access to all events. Teachers should be prepared to turnaround the results of the conference to an outreach format. For more information, see TeXas Earth and Space Science Revolution.
We plan to also host a field expedition to the Menderes Massif in western Turkey, which is contingent upon funding by the National Science Foundation.
The registration and abstract deadlines have passed.
As part of the mission of the Harrington
Symposium to advance our understanding of the Geology of the
Aegean, we are in discussions to develop special publications as an outcome of the meeting.
If you are interested in this as a possible avenue for publication, please email Dr. Elizabeth
Catlos for more information.
