Degree pursued, advisor, and areas of interest:

M.A. in Energy and Earth Resources; Water Resources, Alternative Energy, and Environmental Policy

Other degrees:

B. S. in Mechanical Engineering, 2001, The University of Texas at Austin

What sparked your interest in geology, energy, and the environment?

My studies in mechanical engineering led me to work in the field of coastal engineering, where I got a hands-on look at the complexities of all the Earth's processes and anthropogenic sources of environmental degradation. I have also worked as a production engineer for a gas pump manufacturing facility. I couldn't believe the amount of gas pumps being ordered around the world! What more of an exciting field than fueling society! The Energy and Earth Resources Program at UT really tied together all my interests in Earth processes, environmental protection, and the world's energy crisis. I feel I might really be able to make a difference in the world when I come out of this program with so much knowledge and experience.

Why did you choose UT for your studies?

I bleed orange! UT is a leading school in many fields, particularly research in engineering and energy.

What do you enjoy the most about your studies or research?

My professors have always been excellent. It is awe-inspiring to be in the same classroom with such world-renowned experts in their fields! You can't get that kind of quality anywhere else.

What one research tool could you not live without?

The internet. It is very helpful to look at professional, non-profit, and scientific organizations websites for information. Sometimes I discover things I had never even thought twice about, but it turns out to be a key ingredient to my research.

What are your career goals?

I hope to work for a non-profit organization research alternative energy issues.

Where are you from?

I am from the borderlands of South Texas.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Mountain biking, traveling, photography, anything with my dogs, camping.

What is your favorite rock?

I am particularly fond of the red Texas granite at the Capitol building.

What fun activity would you recommend to an incoming UT student?

Enjoy all the green spaces and live music Austin has to offer!
