student Marcus Gary coordinating the mission—deployed an autonomous,
NASA-funded robot to explore the world’s deepest water-filled sinkhole, Cenote Zacatón. The technology may someday be used to search for life in space. Read field

As part of our strategic plan from 2007-2010, the Jackson School launched in April 2007 a hiring plan to add
30-35 new faculty and scientists. The majority of the openings are not for specific positions but for
multiple hires of highly qualified applicants, at all levels, in any of four thematic areas.
The school also seeks exceptional candidates focused on geoscience education.

Tailgate Party - September 22, 2007
Mark your calendar for the 2nd Annual Jackson School Alumni and Friends Tailgate Party, Texas v. Rice.
Two hours prior to kick-off, East Mall in front of the Geology Building.
The commencement speaker for the second spring JSG graduation was Richard Prior, incoming Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
The event was held in the B.Iden Payne Theater in the Winship Drama Building.

Alumni and friends are responding generously to the new Friends of Student Field Experiences Endowment,
contributing $800,000 in seven months, one of our best annual giving totals ever.
Combined with previous donations, the new and affiliated endowments now total
about $1.2 million.

Many Jackson School scientists aided—and three will appear
in—AGI's new high-definition television series Faces of Earth, a
Discovery Channel program that will air on the Science Channel
starting July 23. The Jackson School was a sponsor of the
production along with AAPG, ExxonMobil, AGI Foundation, USGS and
