SMART Start

Summer Mentoring and Real-World Training
Giving young geoscientists a head start
Giving smart employers an inside track

Hire a Longhorn! The Jackson School has the most talented geoscience students in the country and as early as their freshmen year, they are eager to gain experience in the geosciences. To fulfill this need, the Jackson School Friends and Alumni Network created SMART Start - a summer job program designed to offer freshmen and sophomore students real world geology experience and an early opportunity to explore different careers in the geosciences.

Hook 'em early!
This program allows your company to establish early relationships with the best and brightest students, integrate them into your company's culture and maintain that relationship throughout their college career. Students are perfect candidates for geo-tech work, IT and computer related projects or even office/admin work.

The Friends and Alumni Network is currently seeking companies of all geosciences disciplines to participate.

Important program guidelines:

  • Company registration deadline is February 15, 2010.
  • By registering, you are not committed to hiring a student - only that you will review student applications and interview any promising candidates.
  • Participating companies/job descriptions will be posted online for students to review.
  • Students then submit their resumes to the Jackson School Career Center and we will distribute them directly to your company representative.
  • Interviews will take place in February and March 2010.  Method is at your discretion: in person, phone, email or combination.
  • Students should be notified of employment by April 1, 2010.
  • Minimum 4 week employment - ideal for a summer project.
  • Minimum hours per week is up to each individual company.
  • Suggested minimum salary is $10/hour. This is as little as $1600/moth for a full time, high energy, high aptitude student.
  • Relocation and housing allowance is not necessary, as many of these students go home for the summer.
  • Minimum 6 week employment - ideal for a "summer project".
  • Minimum number of hours per week is up to each individual company.
  • Companies are NOT obligated to hire any student if job requirements cannot be met.
  • Please sign up using this Employer Registration Form.
