A Learning Environment
In a field as broad as the earth sciences, the size of an academic program
can be critical. Jackson School students benefit from taking classes at one the
country’s largest, most diverse and highly ranked geoscience departments.
The
school’s doctoral program in stratigraphy and sedimentology is ranked number one
in the nation, while paleontology, hydrogeology, and tectonics all rank within
the top ten. Internationally recognized research programs span the spectrum of
the earth sciences. A number of faculty also have joint appointments to the
Bureau and the Institute, enhancing research opportunities for students.
Students receive outstanding financial support, with some of the
most competitive aid packages in the nation. Graduate students
select from eight major areas of study. Undergraduates choose from
six majors—General Geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Environmental
Science and Sustainability, Teaching, and Geosystems Engineering and
Hydrogeology. Tracks at all levels lead to strong job placements
after graduation. And to broaden students, the university offers
outstanding courses infields related to geosciences, from petroleum
engineering and environmental policy to advanced computation.
Finally, Jackson School students,
in addition to enjoying Austin’s outdoor scene, have ready access to the natural
laboratory of Texas, which includes some of the most avidly studied geological
sites in the world.
