Exploration & Discovery
From visualizing the skeletal structures of extinct vertebrates to developing
a better understanding of the deep ocean floor, Jackson School researchers are at
the forefront of geoscientific exploration and discovery.
Exploration for
resources and scientific knowledge takes place at all three units and nearly all
academic levels.
The school’s tradition in basic and collaborative research is epitomized by the work of the Institute for Geophysics. Founded in 1972, the
Institute hosts 29 scientists, 22 staff, and a rotation of post-doctorates who
seek to understand the dynamic geophysical processes that influence the earth’s
structure and climate. The development of new mathematical models,
data processing and imaging techniques, and geophysical instrumentation are all
integral to the Institute’s investigations. Researchers work across the globe in
ocean basins, on continental margins, in Antarctica, and in a multitude of sites
of natural seismic activity.
